BUICK CENTIEME: Another "crossover" car/SUV, the Centieme has a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter, 400-hp. V-6; four doors; and room for six in a three-row configuration. Centieme has General Motors' "Versatrak" all-wheel-drive system, which transfers torque from front wheels to rear, and from side to side, to maintain control on various road surfaces.

There are steering-wheel-mounted electronic shift controls for the four- speed automatic transmission. The front seats' back panels incorporate DVD entertainment centers for rear occupants.

CHEVROLET CHEYENNE: This futuristic pickup has dual side doors to access the cargo box, plus hidden storage bins beneath the floor and inside the sidewalls. The tailgate opens fully in the traditional manner, or half-opens to load small cargo or create a work shelf.

There's an extruded aluminum chassis, with wheels pushed out to the corners for stability and greater cargo capability. The Cheyenne has an independent rear suspension and a rear- wheel-steering system, similar to the QS4 system used in some of today's GM vehicles, for enhanced maneuverability.

The bed floor is just 28 inches above the ground, significantly lower than today's two-wheel-drive Silverado. This was made possible by the independent rear-suspension configuration.

Under the Cheyenne's hood is a supercharged 500-hp., 6.0-liter V-8 engine.

FORD FREESTYLE FX: A crossover that will seat up to six in three rows, the Freestyle FX concept is a precursor to a production version due next year as a 2005 model. Ford says it has asmuch interior space as an Expedition.

Ford says the Freestyle is not based on a car or minivan as some other crossovers but an all- new, purpose-built crossover architecture. Construction is unibody.

The rearmost side windows retract into the recesses of the side cargo hold, and the back portion of the roof and rear window move forward, with the roof rails telescoping into their forward portions. The result when that is done is an Explorer SportTrac-like vehicle with a cargo bed.

The Freestyle FX has a 3.0-liter V-6 engine and new continuously variable automatic transmission.
